Hyderabad witnessed a significant milestone for the Indian robotics sector this week as the 2024 India International Robotics & Automation Fair (IIRAF) concluded at the Hyderabad International Exhibition Centre from March 15 to March 17. Over 50,000 visitors attended the three-day event, witnessing the latest advancements in humanoid robotics and industrial automation. The fair, organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), brought together global giants and emerging Indian startups.

Key Humanoid Launches

The centrepiece of the exhibition was the unveiling of the Aether-X1, developed by Bangalore-based Aether Robotics. This bipedal robot is specifically engineered for logistics and warehouse management in Indian industrial environments. It features a payload capacity of 50kg, advanced vision sensors for navigation, and a modular design allowing for quick repairs. The robot is capable of operating in varying temperature conditions common in Indian manufacturing hubs. Additionally, Pune-based RoboTech Industries displayed their 'Sentinel' series, focusing on security and surveillance applications. The Sentinel model utilizes thermal imaging for night operations, catering to the high-security requirements of Indian banking and infrastructure sectors.

Pricing and Market Accessibility

A key highlight of the fair was the aggressive pricing strategy adopted by local manufacturers. The Aether-X1 is priced at approximately ₹45 lakhs, significantly lower than imported counterparts which often exceed ₹1 crore. This pricing aims to make automation accessible to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across India, particularly in the automotive and textile sectors. Experts at the event noted that a reduction in import duties under the new Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has directly impacted these cost figures. Industry analysts predict that this price point will accelerate adoption rates by up to 40 percent in the next fiscal year.

Future Outlook and Collaboration

Organizers expect the event to boost the domestic manufacturing ecosystem significantly. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) representatives attended, signaling strong government support for the Make in India initiative within the robotics domain. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed on the sidelines, including a partnership between Aether Robotics and a leading Indian auto-manufacturer for pilot testing. The event concluded with a panel discussion on the future of AI integration in humanoids, emphasizing the need for standardized safety protocols. With over 200 exhibitors showcasing their technologies, the IIRAF 2024 has set a new benchmark for the Indian robotics calendar, promising to position India as a global hub for cost-effective robotic solutions.
